The Behavioral Gap · long-form
Most products can track engagement.

Most products can track engagement. Few understand what's actually motivating it..or what's missing. This is something I kept running into repeatedly..when I worked inside product teams, when I advised on innovation projects, and especially when teams hit a wall: "We shipped the feature… but it's not sticking." "We followed best practices… but users drop off." "We added gamification… but it didn't change behavior." That gap between what we think is engaging and what's truly motivating is what led me to build the Engagement Gap Audit.

The Engagement Gap Audit is a free tool that helps you see how your product supports (or blocks) real-world engagement ..across 6 behavioral drivers, grounded in science. It is a smaller version of the audits and work we do for companies in digital health, finance, insurance, tourism and more...

Why I Made

It I've spent the last years working with and teaching teams how to design for engagement..not just usability. In doing that, I kept seeing the same thing: we didn't have a shared, structured way to look at engagement across an experience. We were missing a systematic approach to understand why users engage or disengage beyond the surface-level metrics.

So I took the models we use..Self-Determination Theory and PRIME..and made them practical for product teams. These aren't just academic frameworks; they're proven models that help explain why humans do what they do. We of course uses these as a level 2 assessment, after you have gone deeper with both heuristics, needs and behavioral analysis.

In this free tool you have

A radar model that shows your motivational profile across 6 dimensions A behavioral maturity framework based on Motivational Support Levels A scoring engine that gives you section-by-section recommendations A set of next-step actions tied directly to your scores It's the tool I wished existed when I was still in those product rooms, trying to figure out why our carefully designed features weren't driving the engagement we expected and not having to pay big agencies for change requests. How It Works The audit is intentionally designed to be quick but comprehensive: 21 questions based on fundamental psychological needs and behavioral drivers Simple rating scales that require no specialized knowledge No account creation needed..just honest assessment of your product After completion, you'll receive results that include a visual profile of your product's engagement and motivational strengths and weaknesses, specific scores for each dimension, and actionable recommendations. The audit is built with modern tools and designed using the same behavioral principles I teach in the Design for Engagement course , which launches in a few weeks.

This isn't just about identifying problems..it's about giving you clear pathways to solutions.

The audit will also show you

Where you are on the motivational support level scale What specific factors are blocking user engagement How to systematically move to the next level of engagement You can try it free now: https://engagement.aimforbehavior.com If you've ever asked: "Why are users dropping off?" "Why isn't this sticking?" "How do I design for long-term engagement?" This audit serves as a reflection and thinking tool. It provides you and your team a science based approach to thinking about motivation and engagement. Let me know what you think, what you would like to see added or improved.
