Three questions that reveal why change isn't happening in your organization...

If you want to understand why behavior is not changing, we need to start with three basic questions...

1. Does the system/environment in the org support the change? -Workflow & process design -Tools & technology choices -Time allocation & workload

If these are met and there are no barriers, then you can move to ask:

2. Do the people know how to do it? -Training -Elearning -Structured practice -Skill building

If these are taken care of... then you can go ahead and ask:

3. Do they want to do it? -Is the meaning of the change clearly explained? -Are the incentives aligned? -Do they believe it will be good for them?

The questions sound simple, and I have made them so to help illustrate the point that all of these types of questions need to be answered in order to do a good diagnosis, it is only then that you can understand where the most critical barriers are and make sure you use the right strategies to address them in your change initiative.

There is no project that can go well without knowing this beforehand... because the diagnosis not only will help you understand, but it will also tell you where you can and can't enable change (at least within your constraints or with your current levers)

See.. jumping too soon to solutions is normal for all of us.. and most times, when I help companies, they have really great solutions, the issue is that they are using them for the wrong problem.

What other questions do you think are important to ask?
