What is an Outcome vs a Behavior vs an Influence?
This is a great question, and one that I try and answer quite often in my consulting work and in my courses.
When we work on human-centered behavioral science, we need to be specific about what behaviors are - and also what they are not.
Often when I start a project I will ask what the outcomes and behaviors we are working on will be.
The answers I usually get for behaviors sound more like influences or outcomes - so it is no surprise that projects get complicated and solutions get made for the wrong things, when we struggle to define what each of these is.
So I made something to help you easily define and refer back to these whenever you need to - I also included some examples.
It takes practice to define behaviors,it takes even more practice to analyze influences of behavior, but it is all learnable by all of us, and the more we have a common language for behavior, the more we can collaborate and help each other get better outcomes.
A tip I always give for behaviors - if you can act them out, then they are most probably a behavior.
