These are the steps you can use to remove "sludge" in your products, services, and experiences.
What is Sludge?
Sludge refers to unnecessary obstacles or frictions people face when interacting with governments, such as complex forms, stigmatizing language, or unexplained delays.
These barriers hinder people from accomplishing tasks efficiently, imposing a 'time tax' on citizens, businesses, and even the public administration.
While past discussions focused on administrative burdens or user experience, the concept of sludge integrates both by examining the impact of these obstacles through a behavioral science lens.
This approach helps pinpoint specific issues, assess their impact, and propose solutions.
While used in public policy, I believe they are just as helpful and adaptable for the private sector.
The OECD - OCDE has created a sludge academy taking inspiration from the great work and guides the NSW Government has created and shared.
Behind this effort is Chiara Varazzani PhD Dave Trudinger and their teams.
There is a whole site and resources available, I'll put them in the comments for you.
