Recently there has been posts on LinkedIn from a study back in 2021 which looked at back-to-back meetings and how they affect the brain.
As Kathleen Hogan mention in that article back in 2021 on the brain and meeting on the Microsoft website:
“In today’s world of remote and hybrid work, it’s not sufficient to only encourage self-care. We need to innovate and leverage technology to help employees operationalize much-needed breaks into their daily routines.”
So while using and leveraging technology to enable us to take breaks and do self-care is great, we also need to look at how we design the meetings themselves, so we don't just sit there and waste time, but get the outcomes we want.
Around 2021 when this brain study article from Microsoft came out, I was helping teams at one of the companies I was consulting for and meetings were a hot topic.
So, I designed several tools for them, and one of them, which is the one I am sharing with you is a tool based on the I Do ARRT framework from Hyper Island (If you don't know Hyper Island they have great tools and trainings)
The acronym stands for: -Intention -Desired Outcome -Agenda -Rules -Roles -Responsibilities -Time
These can all be components of a great meeting.
The components should be used to ensure good outcomes for your team and really for all those involved in the meetings.
The tool aims to enable your team and those involved to understand every aspect of the meeting.
Hyper island also has a Miro board if you want to look at to see their examples (all linked and referenced in my board for easy access)
I of course have adapted it and it has several other activities, including diagnosing the good and bad of a meeting and a bonus for you to practice with your team. (it should be noted that the tool and components may need changes for your context and organization.)
The point is to get us to be in meetings that matter and that have clear intentions and outcomes, so we don't have to sit in back-to-backs.
