How many steps does it take for you to complete in your organization or something online?
A while back I had counted 40 steps to buy a ticket for a museum on a website.
I also worked building service blueprints in transformation projects, where the steps to internal company processes could be as long as 40 as well.
At each step, there is a chance for cognitive overload, friction, uncertainty, confusion, lack of mental models, memory, lack of attention, etc..
When you start designing for people and enabling behavior, you start to realize just how important it is to build interactions with your products and services.
You also start thinking about context, which many times is forgotten or not given the importance it deserves.
When you sit with your team think about how your customers or employees are meant to make decisions, where they are, what they could be doing, and what could be making it hard for them (hint, they are not just relaxing, with no interruptions and ready to go through 40 steps all at once)
Tip: If your product or service is not doing so well, think about what you could make easier, what you could make a default, what you could take away, and what you could delay for later.
Have you ever counted how many steps it takes to complete a process at work or with a service you interact with? - what was good and what was not so good?
