How can you approach ideation with Behavioral Science?
In the projects we do, ideation is most certainly one of the things we find most enjoyable - that moment when we can get the insights and have freedom to really think about ways in which we could co-create solutions for customers and employees.
One think that has really helped us is to have good tools for doing this ideation - and I wanted to share two of those with you.
The first one is what we call the behavior change technique canvas - which helps the teams that are working on the ideation understand what we are meant to ideate on - I call it structured ideation - as we are following a set of variables to ideate from.
This means we are more systematic and we are able to account for the outcome, challenge, behavior, influences and techniques we could use in order to come up with a solid hypothesis before we begin contextualizing and translating them those insights into ideas.
Once we are completed that canvas we can then move on to our ideation canvas (which we customize for most projects, as each clients needs and capabilities will be different)
In this canvas teams are able to really think about their solutions from top to bottom, including their segments, the features, the dependencies and they can even have custom checklists to ensure that the idea they will prototype and test is solid.
This also allows teams to replace techniques, and see if different approaches test better than others, but with a clear sense of what they are changing, so they can easily evaluate later on.
I find that this process really helps bring behavioral science together with other methods and gets teams excited and familiar with things they may already know how to do.
I will be including both of these tools in my new course on how to design for behavior change techniques which launches soon...
And possibly in the future I will roll the canvases out with examples for free as part of my tools.. if you would all be interested of course.
What tools do you use to combine behavior and design in your ideation?
