In most projects I've worked on, the problem-first approach dominated: "What problem we are trying to solve?" would be the starting question from stakeholders.
However, is framing things as a problem first, the best way to get us to align and work well as a team in a positive way? or is it adding negativity to the team, and making us lose out on important wins?
I asked myself (and I ask you):
Why do we approach things from a problem perspective so much?
Maybe it's just our problem-solving minds, maybe it's a mental model or a routine we are all accustomed to at work.
But what if we started differently.....
What if you and your teams started by asking and investigating what is actually working well and why - and then based on that try to work backward from there and try and scale up the good things we have already done?
One of the things I try and incorporate in my work with clients, that are looking to build better experiences, is to have the teams look for what is working well related to the outcome they are looking to achieve.
I reframe this as an Opportunity Discovery activity and not a Problem Discovery as I want to frame things in a more positive way and show teams that they do things well and that not everything is a problem.. but that there can be hidden gems in what you have already done.
I also run activities to look at the challenges, but not exclusively and not without first seeing if we can find some positive lessons we could implement and scale.
Maybe you and your team already do this, so I am curious if you have ever tried to start finding the opportunities and the good before anything else.
