Here are 3 things that can help you create a human-centric experience.
1) Decision-Making Models:
Understanding how people make decisions is crucial in creating great experiences. There are several popular models in decision-making psychology that can be useful to understand.
One way of looking at this is through the lens of Cognitive Biases and Heuristics:
-Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment. These biases are often a result of the brain's attempt to simplify information processing.
-Heuristics are general rules of thumb that people often use to make decisions.
Sometimes our brain needs to move in a fast and effortless way, and so it relies on these mental shortcuts.
So design in a way that makes things easy for people
Examples of a bias in your team - Confirmation bias (let's build this feature/solution I know it will be a game changer)
2) Motivation theories:
Understanding the psychology of motivation is essential for great experiences. There are several popular theories of motivation that I think are useful, and one of my go-to's is - Self Determination Theory.
Self-Determination Theory, states that people's psychological needs are filled when they feel autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Example of Autonomy
Letting people set their own goals (not forced, but where it feels like you have a choice) this can be in an app or at work.
3) Social Norms:
Social norms are unwritten rules that govern behavior in a society or group. By showing users that others are engaging in a desired behavior, we can increase the likelihood that they will do the same.
Example: home energy bills that can include a descriptive norm about energy consumption.
It's important to note that while social norms can be powerful tools, they can also be used in unethical ways. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the potential ethical implications of using social norms in any experience.
In summary
Gain competence in these 3 areas to create better outcomes for you and your customers.:
-decision-making models -motivation theories -social norms
P.S: By no means are these the only things you would look at, but if you are starting, these are some fantastic areas to learn from and explore.
