Would you pick a cash bonus or an experience bonus if your boss offered?

When given a choice between a cash incentive and an equally valued non-cash incentive, people generally like to get the money.

Now, you might prefer the money, but does it lead to a better outcome for you?

How would you feel after a) taking the money 💰 or b) taking the experience?

In a study done, most people end up reporting more satisfaction from the experience.

So think about the rewards you design for your employees because they can change how they perceive their relationship with the Company. (Likewise, what you pick will also change your relationship)

This illustrated book by Dan Ariely called Amazing Decisions is a fun and easy read, with a story to help you follow along some principles of behavior.

One small reminder, all these studies are great and so is the science, but never forget to account for context :) when designing, as not everything can replicate and you have to do some good amount of prework to design for behavior.

I’ll post a few more stories from this book ( if you think they are helpful)
