What is Behavior Design anyways?
For me, it is a systematic approach that applies behavioral science principles to diagnose why things are easy or hard to do for people, and identifies evidence-based techniques, that can be translated and contextualized into practical interventions that increase motivation and engagement and drive decision-making and actions to improve customer, employee and organizational outcomes.
Let's break it down a bit:
How design helps me: (this can be service, product, experience design)
-Understand the needs -Understand the experience -Ideate and co-create the features, mechanics, flows etc... -Prototype and test the experience
Behavioral Science helps me:
-Understand the behaviors -Understand the drivers of behavior in the experience (using models and frameworks) -Understand motivation, decision making and see what techniques could be included in the experience (doing it in a systematic way) -Test and evaluate behavior change and outcomes
This is a simplified model of behavior design, but I hope it helps you understand that the value lies in using behavior as a complement to your ways of working so it can help strengthen your work and fill the behavioral gaps.
This is one of the slides I am including in my upcoming course: How to design with behavior change techniques which launches very soon where I will be teaching you how to translate behavior change techniques so you can use them for ideation in your projects.
