This is the OECD's BASIC Framework for applying behavior change
The framework is used to analyse behaviors, conduct an analysis, develop strategies, test them with interventions, and scale up results for policy change.
In more simple terms, BASIC stands for:
-Behavior -Analysis -Strategies -Intervention -Change
Having recently worked on developing a custom framework for behavioral insights in public policy with my team for customer, I had to look at and evaluate many different one's out there, like BASIC.
One of the things that stood out for me from BASIC, was the ABCD Framework which is also part of it.
The "ABCD framework assists you in analyzing and diagnosing behavioral problems"
ABCD helps you look at the following factors that may enable or hinder behaviors:
-Attention: Our attention is limited -Belief: We often rely on mental shortcuts and intuition, which can lead to over/underestimating things - and beliefs have levels, some are easily targeted, while others are not. -Choice: Influenced by how things are framed, social aspects, as well as situation and context. -Determination: Our willpower is limited
In the ABCD framework, you can find tactics such as: - Arrange Choices -Create a sense of community -Work with Friction -Timing -Social Proof
Of course like any behavior change framework, you have to follow a logical process to get to use a tactic, otherwise, your chances of success are going to be low.
This is not a beginners framework, but made for experiened practitioners I would say.
Nevertheless you can use the ABCD framework as a thinking tool along to see how your current product, policy or service is causing issues or where it is doing well.
As someone who advises companies and governments in behavioral science and design having different tools to draw from and build on top of to get more contextual has great advantages, and I invite you to explore those for yourself.
