Most change programs focus on the individual...
But there are other levels to think about..without designing for all three levels, the change won't sustain post launch.
Here they are
Organisational System
Is the new behavior embedded in the infrastructure? If the system still rewards the old way, you've built change on quicksand.
Team Routines (norms): Does the team expect this behavior of each other? If the team still operates the old way, the new behavior is not going to sustain.
Individual
Does the person understand, have the skills, and feel motivated? This is where most programs start and stop. Without the system and team levels, individual motivation is gone in weeks.
Before you start
Ask: What triggers the old behavior? What is needed to sustain the new one?
The Reversion Test
Write a Reversion Statement for every critical behavior
"In [context], [people] will revert to [old behavior] when [trigger]." If you can write it, you can design against it.
A change program that doesn't design for sustainment is a temporary program with a permanent budget.
