Mixed methods is going to help you win the game - not just for creating great experiences for customers, but for creating better outcomes for your organization.
This is what I have learnt over the years, and how I’ve been approaching different projects in healthcare, public policy and organizational & cultural change.
I wish I could take the credit for delivering this on my own, but truth is, I am able to work with fantastically talented people who bring these skill sets in and complement each other.
Coming out of a wonderful team workshop, I got inspired to share a few thoughts on how I see things and how they can help you.
First a few concepts and definitions:
1)You use Jobs-to-be-Done because it helps clarify what people are really trying to achieve, the use needs and the progress they seek.
2) You use Behavioral Science because it will help you get specific about what you want people to star, stop or change and then understand why that is.
3) You use Human-Centred Design because it will help you translate those insights into solid opportunities to explore what to make and how to address needs, behaviors and drivers.
4) You use Strategy because it will help you align incentives and systems, which in the end will help to sustain behaviors at scale
No single method captures the whole picture, but each strengthens the others, because It’s not enough to design for behavior, you have to align the system, incentives, norms, processes, and feedback loops, so the desired behaviors become the easiest, most natural ones to do.
That’s what makes Mixed Methods powerful, and a must for how we all work (p.s - I know I did not go into all the possible methods you can mix, but wanted to make sure you had some thinking to go from and get inspired with)
These books are great, but so is working with colleagues in other departments :)
