How can I Motivate my employees or my team? Is there a magic formula?

Before you start going down the motivation road, ask yourself:

Is Motivation really the problem?

I would argue that in most of the cases I have seen, teams already have motivation, but they lack other important factors to turn that motivation into action.

What do I mean by factors?

Well, sometimes the reason we don’t do things is because we may lack the Capability to do those things - think lack of knowledge on how to do something (no one has explained it to you, or even if they did you didn’t quite understand how to do it, and now you are afraid to ask again)

In addition, we may have issues in the work environment such as lack the time(too many meetings), lack of right processes and tools, or we may be copying what others are doing (no one fills the reports, so I won’t do it either)

If you are looking at getting your employees motivated, then first analyze those areas and see if you can find opportunities to remove the barriers they have.

Usually by removing some of these barriers, the motivation will have enough runway to turn into action.

For too long we are sold on motivation as the thing we lack to change our work and our lives, but in many cases it is the other factors that stop us, because as I have seen in many orgs, most teams are motivated to do well, to contribute and to succeed.
