Have you ever missed a critical meeting or deadline due to an over-packed schedule and a forgetful mind?

Have you given up on completing a complex form because it was too confusing to understand?

Have you ever found yourself rushing to complete a task just because everyone else was working at a fast pace?

These are common examples of how both the environment and our internal cognitive processes can impact our productivity and decision-making.

By gaining a deeper understanding of decision-making, we can create more effective processes and experiences.

Instead of relying on assumptions about how employees or customers should behave, a data-driven and informed approach to decision-making would consider the actual factors that drive behavior.

The OECD - OCDE developed something called the BASIC toolkit (i'll leave the link to their simplified version in the comments)

BASIC stands for: -Behavior -Analysis -Strategies -Intervention -Change

What I actually have used from BASIC is their ABCD Framework - (though the flow of basic is familiar to how I work)

I use this as a thinking tool when I am analyzing a service or product - from the OECD guide - the "ABCD framework assists you in analyzing and diagnosing behavioral problems. The framework, and how each aspect departs from rational choice theory."

ABCD looks at: -Attention: Our attention is limited -Belief: We often rely on mental shortcuts and intuition, which can lead to over/underestimating things -Choice: Influenced by how things are framed, social aspects, as well as situation and context.

Determination

Our willpower is limited

In the ABCD framework Wheel, you can find tactics such as: - Arrange Choices -Create a sense of community -Work with Friction -Timing -Social Proof

Of course like any behavior change framework, you have to follow a logical process to get to use a tactic, otherwise, your chances of success are going to be low.

In Summary

The ABCD framework is something you can use as a thinking tool along with other tools to analyze how your current product or service is doing - or even to try and make sure you design it with a sense of enabling people to make the choices they want to make.

As someone who is designing for change, digital transformation, employee experience or products or services, having these tools and combining them with your current ways of working will give you an advantage.

Have you used it? Maybe its time to "spin the wheel" :)
