Designers - what do you think of synthetic personas?

At South by Southwest in Sydney, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s chief decision scientist, Dan Jermyn discussed using generative AI to create ‘synthetic customers’.

These AI chatbots are meant to emulate human behavior to test reactions to new products and financial challenges in different contexts.

The team is using decades of behavioral science studies to simulate human behavior during tough situations, like natural disasters or personal loss.

The aim is to enhance the bank’s product and service offerings.

I have not yet ever build a synthetic customer, but I am curious about the training data and studies used here for sure.

I think they could be used to help test hypothesis, however we need to ensure that lab experiments don’t always replicate - but I assume the teams know this.
