What strategies can we use to change behavior?
One way of doing this in an evidence based way is to use the Behavior Change Techniques Taxonomy(BCTTv1) created by Michie and colleagues from University College London.
There are several categories as you can see in my image - and each category has a subcategory - which gives us over 93 different opportunities to change behavior.
So what do some of the strategies include:
1) Problem Solving 2) Reward Completion 3) Prompts and Cues 4) Goal Setting 5) Salience of Consequences
Think of these strategies as active ingredients or components that need to be included in the solutions you are creating for your customers or employees.
In an initiative you may need to combine them and include more than one.
You of course need to make sure you are addressing the right drivers of behavior before using them, which means you need to do a diagnosis or analysis first ( I teach this in my analysis course - find it in my website or profile)
Here are some steps for you to use these techniques*:
1. Understand the Behaviors you want to enable (needs of your customers or employees) 2. Identify and find patterns of the drivers using a behavior model or framework 3.
Match the drivers to the suggested Behavior Change Techniques to identify which strategies may be appropriate for your context 4. Ideate and translate the Behavior Change Techniques into tactics or features that fit your context and capability
We do this kind of work in all our projects at Aim For Behavior and provide organizations with playbooks, tools and training to implement change!
