Sometimes you CAN'T JUST DO IT... Why? Because to do a Behavior you need to know the drivers.
Let's first start with what a Behavior is:
Behaviors are specific and context-driven actions that customers and employees must do to achieve their desired outcomes. What are some examples at work:
-Sending an email -Saying no to requests that are last-minute
Or perhaps it's about going to the gym and getting some movement in.
We look at behavior because:
1. Behavior can be measured and observed 2. Behavior drives individual, social and environmental change
Now, on to the Drivers of Behavior
The drivers of behavior are used to help us understand the following:
1) The Capability: An individual's abilities and skills
Can I DO IT?
2) The Opportunity: External factors and resources that facilitate or hinder certain behaviors
Do I have the time, resources or environment to do it?
The Motivation
Internal reasons to engage in a behavior
Do I want to do it?
Usually, capability and opportunity when enabled will then raise your motivation (just do it) and then you can actually do the behavior.
However, if those drivers are missing, it is very hard for your customers or employees to just do it.
So remember, if you want to enable behavior you need to know what drives behavior.
Motivation alone is not going to get you there, neither is sheer willpower, if you are missing the others.
So next time you don't make it to the gym, don't blame your motivation, but see if there are other drivers stopping you.
Once you enhance or remove those - by all means - JUST DO IT!
