I have been meeting many people that are openly talking about burnout, stress and anxiety at work.
I am sure there are many more that perhaps don’t feel it is safe to talk about it or maybe they find it is a weakness. (I thought it was for me)
It is not, the human brain is very complex, and to be able to have people study it is a blessing.
It is via scientists that we can begin to understand how the brain works and how we can get the brain to work for us and with us.
As the author says “ Our habits, our actions, our behaviors and our very thoughts drive, reinforce… what is called functional connectivity in the brain”
Much of the bad habits and thoughts we have may be driven by us feeling we are missing something, without realizing that we already have what we need inside of us.
This great book, which I am currently reading before bedtime called The Craving Mind by Judson Brewer MD PhD is highly recommended.
The book answers questions about who is in charge of your brain, who owns it, and who might make things right.
It shows us that mindfulness is something that works and has been studied and backed by science and that practicing it daily will help us break bad habits.
I especially like the RAIN exercise:
R- Recognize that stress is arising A-Allow it to be there I- Investigate the sensations in your body, emotions and thoughts - ask yourself “what is happening with my body right now”? N - Note what is happening moment by moment - tightness, clenching, heat etc…
Dr. Brewer has also written another book called Unwinding Anxiety - which is also recommended.
Work on your brain 🧠 it is worth it.
I believe more organizations should start to design and develop mindfulness 🧘♂️🧘♀️ as a daily (many times in the day) practice for their employees.
