Here is a Framework to help you design for Employee Wellbeing
It is called the PERMA™ and was developed by Dr. Martin Seligman
The Framework has 5 Components:
1)Positive Emotion 2)Engagement 3)Relationships 4)Meaning 5)Accomplishment
These components are meant to be the building blocks that contribute to a fulfilling life, each offering unique routes to well-being:
Let's look at them in more detail:
1. Positive Emotion - Wellbeing is meant to be hedonic, meaning we want to increase positive emotions.
It's important to note that the capacity to experience positive emotions can vary based on the individual (so it's not a one-size-fits-all all)
2. Engagement - This involves deep involvement in activities that draw on personal strengths and take you to that state of "flow" thus making activities intrinsically rewarding.
3) Relationships - Connections with others are crucial for amplifying experiences of joy, meaning, and belonging.
4) Meaning - A sense of purpose is found in contributing to something larger than oneself, which can be through various avenues such as family, community, or work.
5) Accomplishment - Pursuing goals for the sake of personal achievement provides a sense of success and mastery
Examples at work could be
Positive Emotion
Celebrate Small Wins
Regularly acknowledge and celebrate milestones, even small ones, to build optimism and a sense of achievement.
Engagement
Challenge Matching
Assign challenging yet achievable tasks for employees, matching their skill level to promote flow states.
Relationships
Mentorship Programs
Establish mentorship relationships that help employees connect, learn, and grow within the company.
Meaning:
Role Significance
Help employees see the significance of their roles, how they contribute to the company's goals and their own personal growth.
Accomplishment
Progress Reviews
Implement periodic progress reviews that not only address areas of improvement but also celebrate accomplishments to boost motivation.
Once you're aware of what makes up wellbeing - instead of just focusing on happiness - it will be more achievable to live a more meaningful life.
